Renting a motor home in France
Your newsletter has inspired me to look into a family vacation in France sometime next year. My husband and I would like to take our 2 daughters, one of whom will graduate from college this year, to France, the land of our ancestors. We would probably only have 7-10 days , and would like to see as much of France as possible. We want to look into the feasibility of renting a motor home or RV. Do you think this is a realistic option in France? Do you think that 4 bumbling Americans could drive around the French countryside, and are there adequate campsites all around France?
Nicole
Dear Nicole,
An RV in France, huh? Well, you could do it, but my first response is Why?
The idea of being free to drive yourself around at your own pace is a good one, and I strongly recommend getting out into the countryside and exploring on your own. But when it comes to sleeping and eating, forget the pull-out beds and roadside cans of beans. This is France! Stay in an auberge or a hotel or book in a chambre d´hôte. This is the only way to really taste the authenticy of French hospitality, history, provincial decor, and of course the regional cuisine. You´ll be surprised how inexpensive it is for the four of you to sleep in enchanting little spots. Instead of sending you to my favorites, I´ll invite other FF members to email us theirs. There are campsites in France but considering the time you have, I think you should treat yourself to a canapy bed and a menu gastronomique!
