Figuring out how French society works and how its people interact will undoubtedly take a fair amount of time. Think about your understanding of the society you live in-all those cumulative years spent learning to participate in a system with its multitude of layers of unspoken rules, codes and underlying assumptions. With an open mind you will broaden your knowledge of both French society and your own; you´ll get sharper at knowing what people are saying when they´re not talking. Also, don´t forget that contemporary culture is like living tissue; it lives, dies, and changes, like slang. There is no way you can be up on the latest inside variations and cultural references, however, here are a few basic observations designed to help you get oriented to the physical and psychic environment. In that all things are political in France, notes on the political arena come first.
