Question
We will be spending 2 years in Paris and have brought our standard poodle, Molly with us. She is the most wonderful way of meeting and interacting with the French. After a few weeks the bistro owner across the street blows her kisses and offers her scraps of crepes whenever we pass by.

Our French language skills are very limited and we cannot get answers to our questions. What are the rules for dogs on French trains. Can they travel? Must it be reserved in advance? What does it cost? Our dog is about 40 pounds.

Answer
With more dogs in Paris than Parisians, you can imagine there are lots of fun rules and laws dictating their lives. If Molly weighs less than 7 kilos and fits into a manageable sized carrying bag she can accompany you on any French train, but you need to buy her a ticket. 32 francs for any destination. A bargain. If the dog is over 7 kilos (Molly´s 40 pounds is over 18 kilos by the way), no problem, she accompanies you at your seat...but you have to buy her a half-price, second-class ticket. If she bites, you´re supposed to put a muzzle on her. If your neighbors complain, well, the conductor just might put THEM off at the next stop!
