Geography
The division of France into 95 départements is a result of the Revolution and was accomplished in 1790. The three following principles were decisive in its formation: the size of each département was to be approximately 6,100 kilometers; the seat was to be located strategically so that it could be reached in the period of one day on horseback from any point in the département; and the name of each was to refer to its provincial history and character.
France is also divided into 22 regions, which are less important for administrative purposes but should not be confused with the département names. The present organization of the regions dates from only 1960 and is the result of economical considerations.
