Moving From a Flat in France
My husband got a new assignment in Lyon and begins in two months. I have notified our landlord and he is asking for three months´ rent. I do not want to pay two rents at the same time.
The normal procedure in France is to give a minimum three months´ notice to move out of a rented apartment. One exception is a move for professional reasons which cannot be avoided (i.e., your company has completely changed locations, or you have lost your job and the only job you can find is out of town, etc.); in these cases, the notice period can be reduced to one month, but in order to avoid surprises it is imperative that you and your landlord be in total agreement about this as early as possible after you´ve learned that you must move. In any case, do not upset your landlord by talking about not wanting to pay two rents (he or she has your security deposit!)--try to find a new renter for the last month or hope that your real estate agency will. The demand for apartments in and around Paris is so high that the chances of the apartment´s being rented are good.
