In that "shopping" it has been poled as the second or third most popular activity of foreign visitors, a word on the sport is needed. There are plenty of books and mags offering their favorite tips on the most "in" of the latest boutiques. Consult them if that´s your passion. Hermés and Lanc™me and a few other of the most exclusive couturiers open their doors each spring for a few hours for bargain basement sales. Here the most dignified and cultivated ladies from Paris, New York, and especially Tokyo are transformed into ape women, scraping, pushing, and biting their way to the tables of marked-down silk scarves.

Paris´ Seven Major Shopping Districts
Victoires/Etienne Marcel (haute couture and jewellery)
Les Halles (vintage and second-hand)
Le Marais (trendy, party-goers)
Saint Germain (classic)
Haussmann/Saint Honoré/Madeleine (grands magasins)
Champs-Elysées (well-known french and american shops)
La Bastille (trendy and young)

"Even French punks seem more stylishly packaged than their British counterparts," states Cities of Fashion author. "Parisians definitely subscribe to the maxim that fashion transcends fads, trends transcend fashion, and style transcends trends," she writes. You´ll have time to sort this out for yourselves. One tip: watch out for les soldes, the sales which, as the economy worsens, seem to extended for longer and longer each season.
